Insurance agents do a bad job of explaining the concept of "replacement cost." We tend to tell clients they will get new stuff for old junk and while that may be partially true, partial truths get you sued.

One roadblock to replacement cost is building codes or what we insurance practitioners refer to as ordinances or laws. Unendorsed policies offer only a VERY limited amount of coverage for the increased costs to rebuild due to these ordinances or laws, and when your insured is forced to pay these additional costs out-of-pocket, they are going to be mad!

Topics covered in this session include:

  • The purpose of ordinance or law coverage;
  • Coverage gaps creating the need for ordinance or law coverage;
  • Sources and enforcement of building codes;
  • When damage is considered “major";
  • Common ordinance or law requirements and coverage limitations;
  • Three commercial property ordinance or law coverage forms;
  • Ordinance or law coverage (CP 04 05);
  • Ordinance or law - increased period of restoration (CP 15 31);
  • How to develop ordinance or law premiums;
  • Ordinance or law example; and
  • A little something extra: ordinance or law for your homeowners' clients.

Eleven years have passed since ISO promulgated major changes to the Homeowners' program. There have been several reactive changes during this period, but in 2022, ISO introduced a multistate/nationwide filing that results in several major changes to the HO program.

In 2022, ISO:

  • Introduces a NEW (yes, new) Homeowners' form – the HO 00 14;
  • Introduces 13 new endorsements;
  • Makes revisions to 120 forms and endorsements; and
  • Withdraws 11 forms and endorsements.

Many of the changes in this new filing are the direct result of the work done by the Big 'I' Technical Affairs Committee (TAC).

In this session, the Virtual University highlights and details what you can expect from this long-awaited filing. Don't be caught unprepared when your carriers adopt this form. You WILL want to know what has changed and what options are now available for your insureds.

Without using hyperbole, thousands of certificates of insurance (COIs) are issued every day; and, again without hyperbole, most of them are issued improperly. In fact, your agency may have issued an improper certificate as recently as this morning.

What is it about COIs that can get an agency in trouble? If there were just one or two things, it would make your job a whole lot easier, but in reality, there are about 27 different ways a COI can get you in trouble. OK, so 27 isn't an exact number, but you get the idea. A "simple" COI is a potentially dangerous weapon that can be used against your agency

This session digs into the possible dangers of COIs and answers questions such as:

  • What is the problem with issuing a COI with no holder?
  • Should the COI include all the requested Additional Insureds?
  • Who should produce the COI?
  • What wording should NEVER be used on a COI?

  • Properly Extending Insured Status
  • Business Auto Issues
  • Misuse of the Absolute Pollution Exclusion
